As if it wasn’t wierd enough out there, it appears that John Ashcroft is trying to subpoena the medical records of forty patients who received partial birth abortions at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, among others. It doesn’t matter that three courts found that this law is unconstitutional. It doesn’t matter that this would be a huge violation of HIPAA, the Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. All that matters is that another repugnant republican is frothing at the mouth, trying to denigrate our civil liberties.
The issue of abortion aside, the request for medical records, whether through the situation cited above or the parts of the Patriot Act dealing with medical records, is morally wrong. But republican’s won’t see it that way. All they see is “people who have to be controlled or intimidated.” Bastards.
